Electronic signatures
An electronic signature confirms the identity of the sender of a message, guarantees that the message has not been altered en route and prohibits the sender from later denying actions or disclaiming content (non-repudiation).
Signing consists of a checksum derived from all the characters in a message using a mathematical formula, which is sent in encrypted form along with the message. The checksum is encrypted with the sender's private key and decrypted with the corresponding open key. It is then compared with a checksum derived using the received message. If both checksums are the same, the message and signature are correct.
