How smart is a smart card
A smart card is a plastic card with an integrated processor, memory and program. Although the card has the same format as a standard credit card, it is a significantly more advanced instrument. Today's smart cards have the same data processing capacity as early PCs but with somewhat less memory. Smart cards are primarily used for identification, electronic signatures and encryption, which require the capacity to process large numbers.
Smart cards are read by card readers at workstations and entry points. Contactless reading is also an option through wireless transfer using, for example, RFID. In such applications, the system automatically activates when a user approaches a workstation, and the user only needs to enter his or her PIN for immediate logon.
The international organization PC/SC Workgroup issues standards that allow smart cards, card readers and computers from different manufacturers to work together.
