The new solution

Giving people access to information resources via usernames and passwords just isn't secure enough. Moreover, administration of passwords is labor-intensive and expensive. Better tools are needed that provide higher security at a lower cost. The new solution is to entirely eliminate passwords by using smart cards in combination with PKI (Public Key Infrastructure).

The more remote or guest users in a computer system, the greater the password problem. And the more applications in an organization, the more passwords in circulation. Each password constitutes a potential security risk.

To achieve even a modest level of security in a password-based system, passwords need to be at least 15 characters long and should be changed every 20 days. It is hardly reasonable to demand that users remember such long passwords and change them that often. With smart cards and the Net iD PKI client, all these worries disappear.
