Why PKI?

Public Key Infrastructure is a combination of technology, standards and regulations that enables secure communications. With PKI, users can securely exchange data over an intrinsically non-secure public network such as the Internet. Without the risk of unauthorized access, information can be exchanged and questions answered that only concern a single person. The public sector and businesses can reach out to a wide user base with individual services that never close, neither on weekends nor at night.

Although PKI uses advanced encryption and technology, no special knowledge or action on the part of users are necessary. Everything is automatic. PKI was developed in the late 1970s and has been the dominating method in secure communications over public networks for many years.

PKIX, a standardization organization in IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), created the international standards for PKI. PKCS (Public Key Cryptography Standards) are a series of complementing and internationally accepted standards, developed by an organization led by RSA Security.
