Smartcard readers

Drivers

Make sure you have the latest version of smart card reader drivers from the manufacturer.

If not, you may experience various problems in different scenarios.

Turn off power saving

By default, some readers have power saving enabled. This will cause a number of different errors in various situations. Therefore you should disable power saving in the BIOS settings or the properties of the reader driver. The location depends on the type of reader.

Disable hardware interpreted as readers

Sometimes Windows misreads built in hardware devices as smart card readers (even if they are not). This will make them show up in Net iD Enterprise.

This might cause some problems so it is recommended to disable them in the Net iD Enterprise configuration.

  1. Add the name of the device to Denied data value under smartcardreaders.
    Example format:
    name of denied reader 1;name of denied reader 2;
It is also possible to not enter the full name the reader you want to deny in cases where computers get unique names of the device you want to deny (begins with the same characters).
  2. Always make the configuration changes in both 32 bit and 64 bit paths.
    1. Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SecMaker\NetiD\Enterprise\SmartCardReader
    2. Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\SecMaker\NetiD\Enterprise\SmartCardReader

GPO

Services

One of the most important services to disable is the Certificate Propagation service.

Net iD Client will handle the move of certificates to MS CAPI store (mystore) instead of the service. It is also important to disable the service on server OS.

The picture shows a good setup to use for clients.
