Smart card secures the IT environment and simplifies working life
Helse Vest ICT
Helse Vest is one of four healthcare regions in Norway, positioned directly under the Ministry of Health and Care. As early as in 2011, Helse Vest decided to introduce smartcard-based login so as to meet the need for improved IT security and a better work environment.
Helse Vest employs 26,900 people at 50 hospitals and clinics, with care responsibility for a total of around 1 million citizens. Different cards were previously used for entry, personal identification and IT login. In practice, this meant security risks and a lot of time wasted for the users.
A separate PKI infrastructure was established where the individual certificates could be processed via an internal administration portal. The qualified certificates can be handled through the same portal, but require signature by the Buypass security company as the authorised issuer.
Net iD Enterprise from SecMaker has improved IT security at Helse Vest, at the same time as increasing flexibility for the staff. Most employees have simple login certificates, but almost 8,000 users have qualified certificates that grant them authorisation to print and sign e-prescriptions.
Regardless of where the staff are situated in the hospital, a single card gives them access to the premises, the systems and the information they need to be able to provide excellent care.
